Now that her heart had settled back into a normal rhythm and she could breathe again, Miranda could enjoy the view. And what a view it was. Witt, so tall and serious, his usual air of remoteness gone like morning mist. Instead he seemed a little off his stride, awkward, human. Like a puppy trying to do the right thing but banging into furniture, knocking things over. She could definitely get used to him like thisâthis human version of Witt, but the cool and controlled one had been the one sheâd always dreamed about. Who was he really under all the rigid perfectionism and beautifully aloof exterior? What dreams and hopes beat in his heart?
Were medical residents all blind and dumb? Why hadnât he been snatched up?
âMiranda.â He waved a hand in front of her face. âWhereâd you go?â
Now it was her turn to color. She wondered what he would say if she told him that sheâd been imagining what his hopes and dreams and fears were. And what if sheâd told him sheâd crushed on him in high school and that he had occupied more of her brain space than any class ever had.
Probably not a good idea. She pressed her lips together. âContinue,â she said feeling a bit for once like the princess, not the peasant.
âI am filling in for two doctors at the hospital over this month and itâs a pretty brutal call schedule, which Iâm fine with. I want to work. I need it.â His voice dropped almost like a prayer and then he rubbed his palms together as if gathering his thoughts. âBut I wasnât planning on having a little girl.â
âYour cousin.â
âPetal, my cousin, to also take care of.â
âI thought thatâs what we agreed on. Sheâd come here after school and stay with me or go up to the room, and if you were late, Iâd make sure she got her homework done and dinner. And if she decides to do something at Harryâs House Iâd pick her up if you were still working.â
He nodded. âBut I might get called out for a case in the middle of the night. I might have to work all night. Iâm on call on weekends when thereâs no school. Iâm on call four nights this week.â
âAhhh, a nanny,â Miranda echoed Colt as she fully grasped Wittâs dilemma. Sarah really had thrown him a curve ball, but Miranda could understand why. Sheâd been focused on her husbandâs injury and the unexpected medical complication, and sheâd been worried about the long time Petal would be out of school when judging just by today and Petalâs casually placed comments, sheâd already missed a lot of school. Sheâs missed a lot of things that Miranda wished all children could have but so many of them didnât.
âIâll pay you,â Witt said. âI donât know the going rate for a nanny, but I am sure someone at the hospital knows. The money would help, wouldnât it, as you get your business off the ground?
